Two Bitcoin sentiment indices, same day, different verdicts

A pixel-art and riso-print illustration of two gauge-dial characters, one worried with a low needle reading and one calm with a higher needle reading, looking at each other quizzically.

CoinGape's market update cites a Fear reading of 34. CFGI.io's own live page showed 40, Neutral, at almost the same hour. Cyrvola checked both directly rather than picking one.

Risk boundary: A sentiment index is a modeled indicator, not investment advice or a price forecast. Different indices use different methodologies and can disagree.

What happened

CoinGape's market update, published roughly an hour before Cyrvola checked it on August 16, states: "Fear and Greed Index: 34 (Fear)" alongside "Bitcoin: $62,936 (-0.02%)" and "Ethereum: $1,878 (+0.04%)."

CFGI.io's own live Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index page, checked directly by Cyrvola, showed: "The Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index today is 40/100 (Neutral), up from 34/100 (Fear) yesterday." The page carried its own timestamp: "LAST UPDATED 16 AUG 2026, 13:49 UTC."

Why it matters

Both figures describe the same asset on the same calendar day, yet CoinGape's cited 34 and CFGI.io's own 40 fall on opposite sides of the line these indices themselves draw between "Fear" and "Neutral." Cyrvola does not know which underlying index CoinGape's 34 figure came from; CFGI.io's 40 is confirmed directly from CFGI.io's own page.

Sentiment indices are modeled outputs, not a single measured fact like a trade price. Different providers weight volatility, volume, social activity, and other inputs differently, which is enough on its own to produce different scores and different labels for the same day without either provider being wrong.

What the market is watching

This dispatch does not resolve which reading is "correct," because sentiment indices do not have a single correct value; they are each provider's own model. Cyrvola records both readings as confirmed statements from their respective sources, not as competing facts about the same measurement.

The practical takeaway: a single Fear & Greed headline number, cited without its source, tells a reader less than it appears to. Checking which index produced a cited figure is a necessary step before treating any one reading as the market's mood.
